Smart EPD Documentation
Smart EPD is a platform for authoring, validating, and managing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). It connects manufacturers, LCA tool providers, verifiers, and consultants in a single workflow, from product data entry through third-party verification to public declaration.
What's new in v2
Smart EPD v2 is a ground-up rebuild designed around how tool partners and manufacturers actually work at scale:

Organizational model -A full hierarchy of Organizations, Workspaces, and Categories replaces the flat, project-by-project structure. Tool providers can collaborate across multiple manufacturer workspaces, each with its own scoped PCRs and verified tool configurations.

Specification engine with real inheritance -A layered specification system where standards (ISO 21930, EN 15804+A2) flow into PCR-level specifications, then resolve into EPD Templates. Each layer inherits and can add requirements.

Streamlined verification -Tool/model verification happens at the project level through the LCA submission and EPD template review. Once the LCA and EPD template are verified (along with approved constraints), variant EPDs can pass through automated validation. Verifier involvement in variant EPDs is only triggered when something is flagged.

API-first integration -The full workflow is available via API. Tool providers can automate onboarding, submit EPD data programmatically, poll for status updates, and manage tool update requests.
Who uses Smart EPD
Smart EPD serves four primary roles:

| Manufacturers | Produce physical products that need EPDs. Own projects, fill in product data, submit for verification. |
| Tool Providers | Develop and maintain LCA/EPD calculation software. Register tools within Categories, define constraints, support manufacturers using their tools. |
| Verifiers | Review and certify specifications and EPDs for PCR compliance. For tool-based workflows, verify LCA and templates at the project level; for manual workflows, verify per-EPD. |
| Consultants | Perform LCA work and EPD creation on behalf of manufacturers. May or may not be involved in a given project. |
